New Warriors #2 Review

NEWWAR2014002-DC11-LR-b0fc4New Warriors presents itself as the start of a brand new chapter in the lives of the heroes presented within. Christopher Yost has a lot of history, both good and terribly tragic, to deal with to the extent that it may be too much to handle. However, issue #2 shows that Yost might have found a good balance of telling a story for old and new fans alike. It also provides a few good laughs along with some fun character stuff and exciting action scenes.

Speedball seems to be our joke-cracking guide to the new world of the New Warriors. Yost uses him to make a variety of jokes that help to elevate the series beyond a standard beat-em-up book. Some jokes are appropriate for new fans, though there are also some meta-jabs that older fans might appreciate as well. Of course, this tough balancing act may leave both types of readers out in the cold. Unfortunately, there are some clichéd moments to be found in this book such as heroes fighting each other upon first meeting for no other reason than to have a fight scene. That said, Yost uses scenes like this to further develop characters like Kane, for example, so it’s a bit of a give and take.

Marcus To has been wowing comic fans for many years now, and he continues that trend in this new series. His character designs are always a pleasure to look at, and his action is never hard to follow. His style is both classic and fresh and it fits well with all of the fun superheroics on display in this book.

Mike Logsdon is a master of Kung Fu and reading comics. Find out which one of those things is actually true by following him on Twitter and IGN!
