IGN's Oscar Winner Predictions for the 86th Annual Academy Awards

The 86th Annual Academy Awards are this Sunday so naturally we're engaged in the guessing game of who will go home with an Oscar. But will the winners be the ones we truly wanted to see get the nod? There are precious few shoo-ins in this year's Oscars race as 2013 was a particularly fine years for films.

Below you'll find a list of the Oscar nominees in the biggest categories, along with our picks of who we think should win and who we think will win. (That's an important distinction!) We've also included the results of our Readers' Poll where we asked you to pick the winners in the following categories: Best Picture, Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Director, and Visual Effects.

  • American Hustle
  • Captain Phillips
  • Dallas Buyers Club
  • Gravity
  • Her
  • Nebraska
  • Philomena
  • The Wolf of Wall Street

Who Will Win: 12 Years a Slave. Jim Vejvoda's stubborn belief that American Hustle will prevail based solely on the actors' bloc aside, it's the majority view amongst IGN entertainment editors that the slavery drama will take home this year's top prize.

Who Should Win: Gravity. Well, it did win IGN's award as the Best Movie of 2013!

IGN Readers' Pick: 12 Years a Slave, with 31% of the vote.

  • Christian Bale, American Hustle
  • Bruce Dern, Nebraska
  • Chiwetel Ejiofor, 12 Years a Slave

  • Steve McQueen, 12 Years a Slave
  • Alexander Payne, Nebraska

IGN Readers' Pick: Alfonso Curaon (41%)

Who Should Win: Her

Visual Effects

  • Gravity
  • The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
  • Iron Man 3
  • The Lone Ranger
  • Star Trek Into Darkness

Who Will Win: Gravity. The only thing more certain than death and taxes is this.

Who Should Win: Gravity. Smaug looked awesome, but Gravity made us feel like we really were in space.

IGN Readers' Pick: Gravity (60%)

And the remaining Oscars go to:

Steven Price will likely win Original Score for Gravity. Golden Globe loss aside, Frozen's "Let it Go" pretty much has Original Song locked up. Foreign Film will almost certainly go to The Great BeautyGravity will take Best Cinematography, while Production Design is The Great Gatsby's to lose and American Hustle seems poised to win Costume Design. We expect Gravity to also win Film Editing; this award is traditionally a solid indicator of what will also win Best Picture.

We now live in a world where  "and the Oscar goes to ... Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa" is a distinct possibility for the category of Makeup & Hairstyling.

Gravity is likely to win for both Sound Editing and Sound Mixing. We anticipate that The Act of Killing will win Best Documentary.

Disney's Get a Horse! (seen before Frozen) will likely snag the Best Animated Short. Industry conventional wisdom peg The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life to win Best Documentary Short and Helium to take home Best Live Action Short.

We encourage you to play Academy Voter in the Comments Section and sound off with your Oscar picks. The Academy Awards will be broadcast this Sunday, March 2nd, at 7pm EST/4pm PST on ABC.
